1) Parabens
By far one of the top ingredients to avoid in hair products is PARABENS. These inexpensive preservatives are widely used for their antimicrobial properties, and their ability to extend shelf life of products. Parabens are known endocrine disrupters that are not only detrimental to human health, but also destructive to animal hormones and development. Recent studies have suggested that parabens are linked to breast cancer. In fact, research conducted by a team of researchers, led by Dr. Philippa Darbre from the University of Reading in the UK, found that virtually all — 99 percent — of the tissue samples collected from women participating in the study contained at least one paraben, and 60 percent of the samples contained no less than five parabens.
As seen on product label:Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben and Ethylparaben.

2) Sulfates
Sulfates, or more commonly, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is an ingredient in hair products that has long been avoided by hair colorists. Why? SLS is a harsh detergent that is used in floor cleaners, and other cleaning products for it’s foaming/lathering properties. The problem is that it strips the hair of it’s natural oils, needed for moisture and hair growth. Not to mention, if you are one of the 50%of women over 25 who dye their hair, this ingredient will strip the color from your hair over time, leaving the hair dull, lifeless and brittle.
As seen on product label: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, Ammonium Laureth Sulfate, Ammonium Xylene Sulfonate,
TEA Lauryl Sulfate, Sulfur (in dandruff shampoos), Selenium Sulfide (in dandruff shampoos)

3) Ureas
Ureas are synthetic ingredients added to hair products for their antimicrobial and anti-fungal properties. Urea is used in the production of many other products, such as teeth whiteners, baked goods and cigarettes. Very similar to parabens, ureas should be avoided due to the information provided by the American Dermatology Association that claims this ingredient is the most common cause of contact dermatitis. Another not so fun fact, these ingredients emit formaldehyde when heated above 10 degrees. Unless you live in the North Pole, you’re more than likely exposing yourself to a known human carcinogen (cancer-causing) ingredient. Brands that use urea: Shikai, Aveda, Synergy, ProCyte, and John Frieda [source: http://www.ehow.com/facts_5655439_purpose-urea-shampoo.html]
As seen on product label: Diazolidinyl Urea, Imidazolidinyl Urea

4) Pthalates
Pthalates, or “plasticizers,” is a common ingredient found hair products that should be avoided due to their ability to disrupt the human endocrine system, possible link to cancer, and link to birth defects. Studies have also shown that pthalates contribute to weight gain due to their widespread use in products and ability to disrupt the human body’s hormone regulation.
As seen on label: Unfortunately, this ingredient is the hardest to avoid in products. Why? Because as previously stated they are found all too commonly. For instance, this ingredient is used in the ingredient listing, ‘Fragrance.’ Companies are not required to disclose what is in their fragrance, so one may never know the exposure levels. Pthlates are also found in the plastic bottles, due to their ability to provide a flexible material. Studies have found that bottles are more likely to contain pthalates if they use Recycle Codes 1,3, and 7. Read more about pthalates in shampoo.

5) Petrochemicals
Petrochemicals are chemicals made from crude oil and natural gas. Initially it will leave your skin surfaces feeling smooth; however, it traps in toxins and hinders normal respiration by keeping oxygen out. Petrochemicals and their byproducts, such as dioxin, are known to cause an array of serious health problems, including cancer and endocrine disruption (interferences with hormones within your body). Endocrine disruptors interfere with growth, development, intelligence, and reproduction
As seen on product label: PVP/VA Copolymer, Propylene Glycol, Petrolatum, Mineral Oil, Lanolin, Paraffin

As a consummate beauty professional, you want the cold hard facts, and may be wondering why Morrocan Organics hair products are more effective.

While traditional Argan oil is extracted from the seeds of Argan fruit, Moroccan Organics’s Argan oil is extracted from the root cellulose of the Argan trees using advanced, cutting edge technology. The traditional extraction method uses the seeds obtained by tearing apart the hard nut inside of the Argan fruit. These kernels are then processed using dry-pressing techniques that mechanically squeeze out the oil. This traditional and limited process of extraction has become a method of the past. Moroccan Organics uses the innovative and high tech process from PhytoCellTecTM Argan that extracts plant cellulose from the wounded roots of Argan trees that are in the process of healing process because these cells are focused on revitalizing the entire tree.

How are These Argan Stem Cells Procured?

PhytoCellTecTM Argan is produced using a four-step process that includes irritating argan sprouts to induce the formation of callus cells, growing callous cells in liquid cultures, extracting the oil and water-soluble ingredients with liposomal bilayers, and spraying on an isomalt-based powder. Let’s break down each step.

Step 1: Because the tree is so very rare, Argan sprouts are harvested and grown in liquid culture to provide sustainable technology since only a small part of the plant is needed. The Argan sprouts are cut to induce distress, which causes the surrounding cells to dedifferentiate, or turn back into stem cells, and form healing cell tissues called callus.

Step 2: A bioreactor system is used to propagate the obtained callus cells in liquid cultures, allowing a small amount of original plant material to reproduce large quantities of plant stem cells.

Step 3: The process of homogenization is used to disrupt the cell walls so that the oil soluble and water soluble ingredients can be extracted from the liposomal bilayers. This is the best method of extraction from lipid bilayers because they are hydrophobic, meaning that they do not allow water to pass through. Those extracted ingredients can then be vectorized (genetically inserted) in liposomes (artificially pre-pared vesicles) to be used as effective carrier systems for the delivery and time release of these biologically active ingredients. Through encapsulation, delivery, and release of the entrapped bioactive cells once applied, liposomes allow the key ingredients to easily penetrate the cuticle, to more efficiently nourish, repair, and rejuvenate the follicles. This is because hair follicles represent a highly relevant and efficient penetration pathway and reservoir for topically applied substances.

Step 4: A powder-based sugar substitute known as isomalt is sprayed on the liposomes and then dried to allow for capture and control of the delivery vesicles. Isomalt is a disaccharide composed of the two natural sugars glucose and mannitol and it is used as a bulking (increasing of size) and anti-caking agent (additive used to prevent the formation of lumps). This stem culture (plant stem cell liposomes with isomalt) becomes a white, odorless, crystalline powder that has prolonged stability and can easily formulated with personal care products.

Why Does This Root Stem Cell Extraction Support Healthy Hair Growth?

PhytoCellTecTM Argan is designed to delay the depletion of the dermal papilla stem cells located at the base of the hair bulb. This provides dermal rejuvenation of the skin as it vitalizes the cells that are responsible for the production of collagen, a naturally occurring protein and main component of connective tissues, and elastin, an elastic protein that allows the skin to resume its shape after stretching or contracting. These proteins help to accelerate the skin’s natural repair process as well as combat chronological aging through fighting both wrinkles and the loss of firmness.

Why Organic Ingredients?
Organic ingredients used in organic salon products are grown without pesticides, and other genetically modified ingredients. As they are pure and natural, their extracts are much more potent than conventional, chemically derived ingredients found in most in-salon Argan Oil Treatments today.

Both Moroccanoil and Moroccan Organics are argan oil based hair products that are each formulated to be absorbed by the hair instantly, resulting in a natural, silky finish and brilliant shine. Each product is a market leading product used in salons throughout the United States and Canada. While both the products are based on argan oil and advertised for professional use only, there are stark differences between them that salon professionals should be aware of.

Both Moroccanoil and Moroccan Organics are excellent products for in-salon use. While bother have their advantages, each products have characteristics which make them unique and require some careful consideration before selecting the right product to carry in your salon.

Fragrance

Moroccanoil contains an ingredient known as Coumarin or Warfarin which provides Moroccanoil with it’s signature scent that some people say they are “addicted” to. Coumarin is actually most frequently used in rat poison because of its attractive, addictive scent combined with its deadly toxicity. It has been banned in Europe and many other regions throughout the world for its known dangers to the human immune system, liver, and kidneys. The following is a partial list of the organizations or references which have banned or restricted the use of coumarin as an ingredient in either cosmetics or food:

European Union (Banned Fragrances)
International Agency for Research on Cancer (Carcinogen List)
Carcinogenic Potency Database (Suspected Carcinogen)
International Fragrance Association Codes & Standards (Restricted)
United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA – Banned for use in foods)
Moroccanoil also contains Butylphenyl Methylpropional for fragrance which has been found to be a highly toxic endocrine disrupter which is also associated with allergies and contact dermatitis. Moroccan Organics, however, does not contain Coumarin or Butylphenyl Methylpropional. Instead, Moroccan Organics derives its fragrance from a natural blend of certified organic lavender flower extracts, certified organic comfrey, and certified organic citrus.

Diversion

As licensed salon professionals, we should all be worried about manufacturers diverting their so-called professional only products through retail sales channels. A quick search on Amazon.com will reveal hundreds of retailers that sell Moroccanoil at lower prices than many salons buy the products for. Even a trip to your local Target or CVS will demonstrate where the Moroccanoil products are retailed in the megastores. Moroccan Organics, however, is a completely non-diverted professional salon product. This product cannot be found for sale directly to consumers anywhere. Search the Internet and you’re sure to find that Moroccan Organics is only sold directly and exclusively to licensed salon professionals at a competitive wholesale price. Doing this protects the credibility, integrity, and profit of the salon professional who proudly recommend these products.

Color

Both Morrocanoil and Moroccan Organics present a nice amber color. Moroccan Organics’ color is derived from a combination of Certified Organic Argan Oil, Certified Organic Olive Oil, and Certified Organic Green Tea Extracts. Moroccanoil, however, uses a combination of synthetic dyes including D&C Yellow-11 and D&C Red-17, which Environment Canada has classified as being toxic and the United States Food and Drug Administration have restricted from use anywhere around the mouth, lips, eyes, or damaged skin.

Certified Organic Ingredients

Although Moroccan Oil is sometimes referred to as an “organic” product, it does not actually contain many organic ingredients at all. In fact, in addition to the above referenced toxins, the Moroccanoil formula also contains toxic Benzyl Benzoate and Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone. Moroccan Organics, however, is formulated with a rich and nourishing blend of the world’s finest certified organic ingredinets including:

Organic Argan Cellulose Extract

Organic Coconut Oil

Organic Aloe Extract

Organic Green Tea Extract

Organic Lavender Flower Extracts

Organic Comfrey Root Extract

Organic Shea Butter

Organic Argan Kernel Oil

Organic Olive Oil

Vitamin E and Acetic Acid

Argan Oil

Moroccanoil contains Argania Spinosus Kernal Oil which has proven to be an effective finishing product used while styling hair. Moroccan Organics also contains a high concentration of Argania Spinosus Kernal Oil, but its primary active ingredient is Argan Cellulose Extract. This ingredient is a highly concentrated form of argan oil extracted directly from argan tree root cells. Argan Cellulose Extract has proven to be 7-10 times more effective than Argan Kernel Oil. In controlled studio tests, the use of Argan Cellulose Extract has proven to dry hair 70% faster!

Silica

Both Moroccanoil and Moroccan Organics are based on argan oil and silica. Silica is compound most commonly found in quartz and sand which provide slip to the hair by smoothing the scales of the cuticle. Smoothing the scales of the hair fiber’s cuticle allows hair fibers to flow over one another without their scales getting caught on each other.

Pricing

While Moroccanoil and Moroccan Organics are both excellent products, Moroccanoil comes with a lower price tag. Due to the high cost of organic raw materials, Moroccan Organics can range 10% 20% more expensive than Moroccanoil.

Summary

While their are other argan oil hair products on the market, Moroccanoil and Moroccan Organics dominate the professional marketplace for this product category. Both products perform very well. If price is an issue for you, Moroccanoil may be the most economical and will yield quality results. If ingredients and performance are more important, Moroccan Organics may be the better choice.

• Argan tree groves survive for 125 – 450 years, making them a valuable inheritance for future generations.
• Argan oil has a similar fat content to olive oil and is used for similar purposes. Commercial Argan oil is a lot more expensive than olive oil. The Argan tree however lives longer than the Olive tree and requires no cultivation.
• Traditionally the local Berber women collect the seeds and press them to obtain the Argan oil for domestic use. This is a laborious process taking about 12 – 20 hours of hand processing to produce one litre of Argan oil.
• Oil produced by this method will keep for 3 – 6 months because it has extremely high vitamin E levels and is considered oxidatively stable.
• Moroccan families produce the oil as needed from a store of the kernels, which will keep for 20 years unopened.

Argan oil has been produced for hundreds, possibly even thousands of years by Berber tribes in a region which is today known as Arganeraie, the only area where the rare and endangered Argan tree grows. The first written document about Argan tree and Argan oil is from the thirteenth century: Ibn Al Baytar, a botanist and physicist from Muslim Spain described the Argan tree and Argan oil in his botanical encyclopedia.

Since these early times, and most likely even longer, Argan oil has been obtained by Berber tribes using a traditional but complicated hand-crafting process. After separating the dried fruit, the extremely hard nut is opened between two stones. The seeds are removed from the nutshells and lightly roasted to enhance the flavor of the oil. The roasted kernels are ground in a heavy stone quern, producing an oily paste. The Berber women then constantly kneed the paste to extract the oil from the paste. After decanting and filtering, the oil is ready for consumption.

The art of producing Argan oil in this traditional way has been handed down and perfected from generation to generation. Traditionally, Argan oil was mainly produced for in-home use. Berber women used the oil for cooking, as cosmetic oils and as treatment for many illnesses and skin conditions. Small amounts were produced for trading within Morocco, but only very little Argan oil was exported.

Starting in the early 90s of the last century, the European cosmetic industry as well as culinary interests discovered Argan oil. The exceptionally high amount of anti-oxidants made Argan oil interesting for cosmetic applications. And chefs, particularly in France, were enjoying the unique gourmet taste of Argan oil.
